How to choose
Height first. A coffee table should sit level with the seat cushion or a little below — roughly 40 to 45cm for most sofas. Higher than the cushion and the table dominates; much lower and reaching a drink becomes a stretch.
Then length. Aim for around two-thirds the length of the sofa it serves. A 240cm three-seater wants something near 150cm; a small two-seater is better with a 90cm table or a pair of nesting pieces that can separate when people are round.
Leave 40cm between the table and the sofa. That is enough to walk past without turning sideways and still close enough to reach without leaning. Below 30cm the gap reads as cramped however good the table is.
Match the top to the traffic. Marble and glass are the most striking and the least forgiving — they show rings and they chip at the corners. Reclaimed teak and oak take knocks and get better for it, which is what makes them the sensible choice in a room with children or a dog.

- What size coffee table do I need?
- About two-thirds the length of your sofa, at a height level with or just below the seat cushion — usually 40 to 45cm. Leave roughly 40cm between the table edge and the sofa so people can pass without turning.
- Is a marble coffee table practical with children?
- Honestly, less so. Marble is porous, so wine and citrus can mark it, and corners chip if knocked hard. Reclaimed teak, oak or a metal-framed table with a wood top take the same treatment without showing it.
- Round or rectangular?
- Round suits a small or busy room — no corners to catch a shin, and it works with seating arranged at angles. Rectangular suits a long sofa and a room people walk through, because it follows the line of the furniture rather than interrupting it.
- How much clearance do I need around a coffee table?
- 40cm to the sofa, and at least 60cm on any side used as a walkway. If the room is tight, a nest of tables gives you the same surface when you need it and the floor back when you don't.
