How to choose
Use the corner. It is the least usable square metre in most kitchens and the one place a 3- or 4-tier corner unit turns dead floor into four surfaces without narrowing a walkway.
Check the depth against your gangway before the height. A 40cm-deep unit in a galley kitchen with 90cm between runs leaves 50cm to walk through, which is tight with an oven door. In that case the 23cm pieces are the honest answer.
Put weight low and heat away. Solid teak carries plenty, but load the bottom shelves with the jars and appliances and keep the top for light things — and keep any wood unit clear of the hob's splash zone and out of the direct steam of a kettle.
Choose castors or folding for a kitchen that changes. The wheeled display unit can be pulled out to reach behind, and the A-frame folds flat when you want the floor back — both worth more than a fixed shelf in a room that also has to be cooked in.

- Is teak all right near a hob or a sink?
- Near, yes; in the splash zone, no. Keep it out of direct steam from a kettle and away from hob spatter, and wipe spills off rather than letting them sit.
- How do I look after solid teak indoors?
- Dust it and wipe it with a barely damp cloth. Indoors it needs no oiling to survive — oil only if you want to deepen the colour — and it should be kept off a radiator, which is what opens up joints.
