How to choose
Height is the whole point: level with the chair arm, or a little below. Around 55 to 65cm suits most armchairs and sofas. Too tall and it blocks the arm; too short and putting a glass down becomes a reach.
Small is usually right. A 40 to 50cm top holds a lamp and a mug, and anything much larger starts behaving like a coffee table in the wrong place. Where you need more surface occasionally, a nest gives it to you without keeping it there permanently.
Consider the base against the floor. A pedestal or three-leg base is easier to place on a rug than four legs, because it will not rock across the edge of the pile.
For a lamp, weight matters. A light metal-framed table with a heavy ceramic lamp on it is a tipping hazard where there are children — pick the heavier marble or solid wood pieces for that job.

- How tall should a side table be?
- Level with the arm of the chair it serves, or slightly below — usually 55 to 65cm. Measure your own chair arm rather than working from an average, because armchair heights vary a lot.
- What is the difference between a side table and an end table?
- Nothing meaningful — the terms are used interchangeably, and both describe a small table beside seating. Occasional table means the same thing again.
- Do nest of tables have to stay together?
- No, and they are most useful apart. Two or three tables of graduating size can serve different chairs and come back together when the floor is needed, which is why they suit smaller rooms.
- Will a side table sit level on a rug?
- A pedestal or three-legged base will. Four legs bridging the edge of a rug tend to rock, so either place the table fully on the rug or fully off it.
