How to choose
Measure the route in before the room. A sofa has to pass the narrowest point — doorway, stair turn, half-landing — and it cannot be persuaded. Measure the diagonal of the doorway as well as its width, since a sofa turned on its side often goes through when it will not go through flat.
Leave 90cm of walkway where people pass, and 40cm between the sofa and the coffee table. Fitting the sofa is not the test; walking round it afterwards is.
Seat depth decides who it suits. Around 55cm suits sitting upright with feet down; 60cm and over is for sinking into and is uncomfortable for anyone short. If the household is mixed, the shallower seat is the safer choice.
Match the fabric to the traffic. Chenille and bouclé are warm and hard-wearing but hold pet hair; linen is cool and relaxed but creases and marks more readily. On a sofa in daily use with animals, the tighter weave wins.
