How to choose
Buy the unit wider than the screen — ideally 20cm clear either side. A television overhanging its stand looks precarious even when it is bolted to a wall, and the extra width is where a speaker or a box actually goes.
Then check the height against your sofa. The middle of the screen wants to be at seated eye level, roughly 100 to 110cm from the floor. Subtract half your TV's height from that to get the ideal top surface: for a 55-inch screen (about 68cm tall) that is a unit around 66cm to 76cm high — which is why the taller units here suit large screens and the 44cm ones suit wall-mounted televisions.
Count the boxes before choosing between open shelves and doors. A console, a sound bar and a set-top box need ventilation and remote line-of-sight; doors that are solid rather than fluted or mesh will need leaving open, at which point they are worse than shelves.
Last, plan the cables. Check whether the unit has a rear cut-out — most media units here do — and measure from the socket to the unit before buying, because an extension trailing across a hearth undoes the whole piece.
