Moving water changes a garden more than anything else you can put in it, because it works on hearing rather than sight — it covers traffic, fills a silence and makes a small courtyard feel enclosed. The range here starts at £19, which makes it the cheapest genuine change on the site.
It runs from tabletop pieces at 12.5cm to 35cm — cascading rock formations, pots, Buddha and elephant designs, one with a working water wheel — up to freestanding four- and five-tier fountains with LED lighting at 72cm. Every piece includes its pump.

Top it up, and keep the pump under water. A small feature loses water to evaporation surprisingly quickly in warm weather, and a pump run dry burns out — that is the one failure that turns a working fountain into an ornament, and it is entirely avoidable.
Match the volume to the space. A tabletop piece is a sound you notice from two metres away; it will not be heard over a road. For a garden that needs to be filled, the multi-tier freestanding fountains are the ones that carry.
Site it level and near a socket unless it is solar. A fountain on a slope runs unevenly and splashes out on one side, which empties it faster. Any mains pump needs an outdoor-rated socket and an RCD.
Plan for winter. Standing water freezes, and ice expands and cracks a basin. Drain the feature, take the pump out, dry it and store it indoors from November — that is the difference between a fountain that lasts one season and one that lasts ten.
