How to choose
Top it up, and keep the pump under water. A small feature loses water to evaporation surprisingly quickly in warm weather, and a pump run dry burns out — that is the one failure that turns a working fountain into an ornament, and it is entirely avoidable.
Match the volume to the space. A tabletop piece is a sound you notice from two metres away; it will not be heard over a road. For a garden that needs to be filled, the multi-tier freestanding fountains are the ones that carry.
Site it level and near a socket unless it is solar. A fountain on a slope runs unevenly and splashes out on one side, which empties it faster. Any mains pump needs an outdoor-rated socket and an RCD.
Plan for winter. Standing water freezes, and ice expands and cracks a basin. Drain the feature, take the pump out, dry it and store it indoors from November — that is the difference between a fountain that lasts one season and one that lasts ten.

- Is a pump included?
- Yes, every water feature here comes with its pump. Keep it submerged at all times — running a pump dry is the most common way one of these fails.
- How often do I need to top up the water?
- In warm weather, every few days for a tabletop piece. Evaporation is faster than people expect, and once the level drops below the pump inlet the pump is running dry.
- What do I do with it in winter?
- Drain it, remove the pump, dry it and store it indoors. Water left in a basin freezes and the expanding ice cracks it — this is the single biggest cause of a fountain lasting only one season.
- Will I actually hear a tabletop water feature?
- From a metre or two, yes — on a table, a desk or a patio beside where you sit. It will not fill a garden or mask traffic; for that you want one of the multi-tier freestanding fountains.
