A bathroom mirror is used at close range, in bad light, by someone half awake. That makes it the one mirror in the house where the lighting matters more than the frame. How to choose
Width first. A mirror should be as wide as the basin or a little narrower — never wider, or it reads as an afterthought hung over the wrong unit. For a standard 60cm basin, a 60 to 70cm mirror is the sweet spot.
Height next. Hang the centre of the glass at roughly 165cm from the floor, which puts it at eye level for most adults, and leave 20 to 25cm between the top of the basin or splashback and the bottom of the frame.
Then decide about light. If the bathroom has a single ceiling fitting, that light falls from above and puts your own face in shadow — exactly the problem an illuminated mirror solves. If there are wall lights either side of the mirror position already, a framed piece will do the same job for less.
Finally, the frame material. Faux shagreen, linen and walnut all belong in a bathroom that is ventilated and dry between uses; in a small room with a shower and no extractor, a mirrored-glass or metal-framed piece is the safer choice.

- Do I need an illuminated mirror?

- Will a wooden or fabric-framed mirror survive a bathroom?
- In a ventilated bathroom, yes. In a small room with a shower and no extractor fan, repeated steam will eventually lift a veneer or mark a fabric frame — choose mirrored glass or metal there.
- Round or rectangular above a basin?
- Round softens a bathroom full of straight lines and suits a single basin. Rectangular gives more usable reflection for the same wall space and suits a wide unit or a double basin.
