A bedside table is judged on one thing: whether the lamp, the book and the glass of water all fit without anything balancing. Everything else — the drawer, the finish, the shape — comes after that.
The range runs from ribbed walnut and solid oak to painted birch and reclaimed teak, in one, two and three drawer versions and in heights that suit a low bed as well as a high one.

Match the height to the mattress, not the bed frame. The top should land within about 5cm of the top of the mattress — level is ideal. A tall bed with a low table means reaching down for the light in the dark, which is exactly when it matters.
Measure the width you actually have between bed and wall before falling for a piece. Under 45cm and a slim single-drawer table or a wall shelf is the honest answer; 45 to 60cm covers most of the range.
Decide what has to be hidden. An open shelf keeps a small room feeling lighter and forces tidiness. Drawers hide chargers, medicines and reading glasses, and on a two or three drawer chest the bedside becomes real storage in a room that has none spare.
Think about the plug and the switch. A table with a solid back panel can make a socket unreachable and a cable awkward to route — worth checking against where the sockets actually are.
