How to choose
Group in odd numbers and vary the height. Three lanterns of different heights read as an arrangement; four of the same height read as a shop display. This is why the sets of three here do more work than three separate purchases.
Match the lantern to the wind. An open holder is fine on a dining table and useless on a patio. A hurricane lantern with a glass or ceramic surround, or one with a lid like the Sona, is what keeps a flame alive outdoors.
Choose solar or LED where a flame is a bad idea — a hallway with children, a table under a fabric parasol, a doorstep nobody is watching. The rattan solar lanterns charge in daylight and need no cable, so they can sit anywhere in a garden.
Never leave a real flame unattended, keep it clear of overhanging fabric and foliage, and stand a floor candle holder on a firm level surface. A 177cm holder is stable on stone and not on soft ground.

- How many lanterns should I group together?

- Will a candle stay lit outside?
- Not in an open holder. Use a hurricane lantern with a glass or ceramic surround, or one with a lid, and keep it out of a through-draught between a doorway and a gate.
- Are the solar lanterns bright enough to be useful?
- They are atmosphere rather than task lighting — enough to mark a path or a table edge, not enough to read by. For light you can actually see by outdoors, look at the solar bollards in Garden Lighting.
- What should I be careful of with a floorstanding candle holder?
- Stability and clearance. Stand it on firm level ground, keep at least a metre between the flame and anything overhanging — parasol fabric, branches, a canopy — and never leave it burning unattended.
