One ceiling light in the middle of a living room is the reason so many of them feel like waiting areas after dark. A room that works has three layers: something overhead for when you need to see, something at head height for atmosphere, and something at elbow height to read by.

How to choose
Get the ceiling fitting right for the height. Under about 2.4m, a semi-flush fitting gives the decorative effect without hanging into the room. Over a stairwell or in a room with 2.7m or more, a hanging chandelier is what fills the volume — and the bottom of it should stay at least 2.1m above the floor where people walk.
Then add the layer that gets used. Almost nobody wants the big light on at nine in the evening, which means the table lamps and wall lights are doing the real work. Two lamps at opposite corners beat one bright fitting overhead every time.
Aim for 2700K bulbs across all of it, and put whatever you can on a dimmer. Mixed colour temperatures in one room are what make a living room feel unresolved — one warm bulb next to one neutral one reads as a fault, not a choice.
Place a reading lamp by the seat, not by the wall. The bottom of the shade wants to be near seated eye level, roughly 100 to 110cm from the floor for a lamp on a side table, so the light falls on the page rather than in your eyes.

- Chandelier or semi-flush ceiling light?
- Ceiling height decides it. Under about 2.4m choose semi-flush; above 2.7m, or over a stairwell, a hanging fitting fills the space properly. Keep the bottom of any pendant at least 2.1m above a walkway.
- How many lamps does a living room need?
- At least two beyond the ceiling light, at opposite ends of the room. The overhead fitting is for finding things; the lamps are the light you actually live under, and one is never enough for a whole room.
- How high should a reading lamp be?
- The bottom of the shade at about 100 to 110cm from the floor, near seated eye level. That puts the light on the page rather than in your eyes or on the ceiling.
- What bulbs should I use?
- 2700K warm white throughout, and dimmable where the fitting allows. Mixing warm and neutral bulbs in one room is the most common reason a living room's lighting feels wrong without anyone being able to say why.
