How to choose
Buy for the stems you actually come home with. Supermarket bunches are cut at 40 to 50cm, which wants a vase of 20 to 25cm — roughly half the stem length — so the flowers sit above the rim rather than drowning in it.
Neck width decides whether an arrangement stands up. A narrow neck holds a handful of stems upright with no effort and suits a few good flowers. A wide mouth needs enough volume to fill it, or the stems fall to the sides and the middle stays empty.
Tall vases are for branches and structure, not bouquets. The 50cm-plus pieces here look best with eucalyptus, pampas or bare branches — material that holds its own shape — and they work empty, which a small vase does not.
Ceramic or glass is a practical choice as much as an aesthetic one. Glass shows the water, so it needs changing before it clouds; glazed ceramic hides the water and hides a cheap stem end, and is the more forgiving choice on a mantel or a shelf.
