How to choose
Hang at eye level: the centre of the piece at about 145 to 150cm from the floor. Almost every picture in almost every house is higher than this, which is why so many rooms feel top-heavy.
Above furniture, the rule changes — leave 15 to 25cm between the top of a sofa or sideboard and the bottom of the frame, so the two read as one group rather than two unrelated objects.
Scale to the wall, not to the frame you like. Aim to fill roughly two-thirds to three-quarters of the width of the wall or the furniture below. Where nothing single is big enough, three or five smaller pieces hung as one block will do it — treat the group's outline as the artwork.
Then match the medium to the room. Hand-painted canvas has texture that survives being seen from the side, which suits a hallway you walk past. Glazed frames reflect, so keep them off the wall directly opposite a window, and hang wooden pieces away from a radiator or a steamy kitchen wall.
