Mother of pearl is the iridescent inner layer of shell, cut and laid as an inlay. It is a natural material, so the play of colour shifts with the angle you view it from and with the light in the room — the same table looks cream and flat under a downlight and iridescent in raking daylight from a window. No two tops carry identical figuring.

The lacquer is the working surface. It is what protects the shell underneath, and it is the layer that determines how the table should be cleaned.

Keep it out of direct sunlight. This is the manufacturer's specific instruction and it is worth following — prolonged UV yellows lacquer and can dull the iridescence of the shell underneath. A hallway or an interior wall suits it better than a sunny bay window.
