The dining table is the piece of furniture most often bought a size too large. It is the one that has to be walked around every day, and 20cm too much length costs more in usable room than it adds in seats. This is the largest furniture range on the site — sixty-six pieces, from £112 for a single chair to £2,459 for a complete set.
It runs from four- and six-seat sets — the Vermont white-wash round, the Weston and Westford in marble effect, the Wimslow in tempered glass — to individual chairs in rattan and oak: the Lagom range in black, natural and white wash, and the Lyon cross-back. How to choose
Allow 60cm of table edge per person and about 90cm of clearance behind each chair. That clearance is the figure that decides the table, not the seat count: a 200cm table in a room without 90cm behind the chairs seats six people who cannot get out.
Round for small and busy rooms, rectangular for long ones. A round table takes less floor for the same number of seats, has no corners to catch a hip, and seats an extra person at a squeeze. A rectangular table follows the line of a galley or a knocked-through room instead of interrupting it.
Choose the top for the traffic. Marble effect and tempered glass are the most striking and show the most — rings, fingerprints, chips at a corner. Oak, mango and rattan-and-wood combinations take daily use and homework and look better for it.
Buy the set where the set exists. A matched table and six chairs here costs less than the pieces separately and removes the seat-height problem — an 18 to 30cm gap between seat and table top is what makes a chair comfortable, and mismatched pieces frequently miss it.
