How to choose
Choose the fuel by how you will use it. Gas for an hour after dinner on a weekday: instant, controllable, no ash. Wood for the evenings that are about the fire itself. Electric or infrared for a covered porch or a balcony where an open flame is not an option at all.
Then size the output to the space. 40,000 BTU is right for four people around a table; 50,000 BTU suits a larger group or a more exposed garden. A glass wind screen matters more than the extra BTU if your patio catches a draught, because it stops the flame being blown flat.
Site it once and properly. Firm, level, non-combustible ground — stone or concrete, not decking or grass — with clearance from walls, fences, furniture and anything overhead. Never under a parasol, canopy or pergola roof, and never indoors, in a garage or in a shed.
Plan the gas and the covering. No fire pit here includes its cylinder; they run on LPG propane, need a matched regulator and hose, and the cylinder stays upright and outdoors. Let the unit cool completely before covering it, and store the cover on rather than off over winter.
