Chandelier or pendant light — and how much ceiling clearance?
A pendant wants at least 7ft (213cm) of floor clearance anywhere someone walks under it, and 75cm above a dining table specifically. A chandelier's more ornamental scale usually wants 8-9ft (244-274cm) of ceiling height to hang properly. The real difference between the two, and eight of our own lights measured against both rules.
Warm white or cool white — which for which room?
Warm white (2700-3000K) suits living rooms and bedrooms — the same colour temperature as candlelight and a sunset. Cool white (5000K+) suits task-focused spaces like a home office or a workbench. A fitting that needs a room to match it
125cm across and 146cm from the ceiling to the lowest glass, this is the largest light in the range and it is not a fitting you talk anyone into. Sixteen arms carry spherical shades outwards rather than downwards, so the light comes from a wide plane instead of a single point and the shadows underneath it are soft.
The size sets the room. Hung over a dining table it wants the table to be at least 180cm long or it overhangs the edges; in a stairwell or a double-height entrance it has the drop to fill the space rather than float in it. Under a standard 240cm ceiling it will not work — the glass would finish barely above head height.
Bulbs and fitting
Sixteen E14 bulbs, each up to 25W. Bulbs are not included, so budget for the set — and buy them all the same, because sixteen shades make any mismatch in colour temperature obvious at a glance.
It arrives fully assembled, which at this size is worth knowing: there are no arms to fit and no shades to hang. The whole weight goes onto one ceiling point, so the fixing wants checking against the joist rather than the plasterboard.
