Chandelier or pendant light — and how much ceiling clearance?
A pendant wants at least 7ft (213cm) of floor clearance anywhere someone walks under it, and 75cm above a dining table specifically. A chandelier's more ornamental scale usually wants 8-9ft (244-274cm) of ceiling height to hang properly. The real difference between the two, and eight of our own lights measured against both rules.
Warm white or cool white — which for which room?
Warm white (2700-3000K) suits living rooms and bedrooms — the same colour temperature as candlelight and a sunset. Cool white (5000K+) suits task-focused spaces like a home office or a workbench. Most kitchens and bathrooms sit in the middle at neutral white. The scale explained, and which of our own lights let you choose.
A papier mache body in a black and white stripe over an iron frame, finished with a dome shade.
Papier mache is an unusual material for a lamp and it behaves unlike ceramic or metal. It is very light for its size, the surface is matte and slightly textured rather than glazed, and each piece carries small variations from the forming process — the stripe will not be identical between two lamps.
Bulbs are not included, so order them with the fitting if you want it working the day it arrives.
An LED is the sensible choice here specifically because of the material: LEDs run cool, and a paper-based body with a shade over it is not somewhere to be generating unnecessary heat.
A dome shade directs light downward into a defined pool rather than spreading it through the room. That makes this a task and accent lamp — good on a bedside table, a desk, or a console where you want a pool of light rather than general illumination.
It also means the lamp reads as a dark silhouette with a bright base rather than a glowing object, so it works best where there is other light in the room.
Dust with a dry cloth only. This is the one care instruction that really matters on this lamp: papier mache is paper and paste, and a damp cloth will lift, cockle or stain the surface. Never use a damp or wet cloth, and keep it out of bathrooms and other humid rooms.
