Chandelier or pendant light — and how much ceiling clearance?
A pendant wants at least 7ft (213cm) of floor clearance anywhere someone walks under it, and 75cm above a dining table specifically. A chandelier's more ornamental scale usually wants 8-9ft (244-274cm) of ceiling height to hang properly. The real difference between the two, and eight of our own lights measured against both rules.
Warm white or cool white — which for which room?
Warm white (2700-3000K) suits living rooms and bedrooms — the same colour temperature as candlelight and a sunset. Cool white (5000K+) suits task-focused spaces like a home office or a workbench. Most kitchens and bathrooms sit in the middle at neutral white. The scale explained, and which of our own lights let you choose.
Metal throughout with a polished chrome finish, in a slim upright form. Chrome is a reflective finish rather than a painted one, so it picks up and returns the light around it — useful in a darker corner, and worth noting if you have a scheme built on matte blacks and brushed brass, where a mirror-bright chrome will stand apart.
157cm tall with a 28cm base diameter. At that height the light source sits above the shoulder of someone seated beside it, which is where you want it for reading — high enough to throw light onto a page rather than into your eyes.
The 28cm footprint is the more practical number. It takes up less floor than most side tables, so it slots into the gap beside a sofa arm or between an armchair and a wall, in spaces where there is no room for a table and a table lamp.
Floor lamps do their best work at the corner of a seating group, angled in. Directly behind a chair the light falls over the shoulder onto a book; in a room corner it lifts the ceiling line and takes the flatness out of a single overhead fitting.
Run the cable along the skirting rather than across open floor, and keep the lamp out of the main walking line through the room — a slim base is easier to catch than a wide one.
Wipe the chrome with a soft, dry cloth. Chrome shows fingermarks and water spots more readily than a brushed or painted finish, so a dry cloth is better than a damp one, and abrasive cleaners will scratch the plating permanently.
