How many lights does a room need?

Chandelier or pendant light — and how much ceiling clearance?
A pendant wants at least 7ft (213cm) of floor clearance anywhere someone walks under it, and 75cm above a dining table specifically. A chandelier's more ornamental scale usually wants 8-9ft (244-274cm) of ceiling height to hang properly. The real difference between the two, and eight of our own lights measured against both rules.

Bronze, and a wider spread than a cluster
80cm wide, 37cm deep and 100cm tall, so it is a long fitting rather than a round one — the shape that suits a rectangular table or a kitchen island, where a circular pendant leaves the ends of the surface unlit.
Bronze is warmer than black and far quieter than brass. Against glass shades it reads as an older fitting than it is, which is what stops seven lights in one frame looking like a showroom piece.
Bulbs and drop
Seven bulbs at up to 40W each. They are not included. Seven at full wattage is a great deal of light for one fitting, so this is a strong candidate for a dimmer — the difference between a working kitchen and an evening room.
Hang the lowest point 70–90cm above a table top, which puts the fitting itself comfortably above the eyeline of people sitting across from each other. Over a walkway rather than furniture, leave at least 210cm of clear headroom.
