Which planter material actually survives a British winter outside?
Terracotta and unglazed ceramic absorb water and crack when it freezes inside them — the classic winter casualty. Wide and low, for something that spreads
36cm across and only 20cm deep, this is a bowl rather than a column, and that shape decides what it is good for. Shallow-rooted planting — herbs, succulents, alpines, seasonal bedding — does better in it than anything that wants to send roots down.
The two-tone finish leaves part of the Paulownia natural and darkens the rest to brown, so the grain still shows through rather than being painted over.
Planting it
The 36cm opening takes a 30cm nursery pot, or three or four smaller plants set together, which is what a wide low planter is really for: one pot that reads as a small arrangement instead of a single specimen.
It holds roughly 14 litres of compost filled to within a couple of centimetres of the rim. At 5kg empty it stays movable when planted, so it can follow the light through the year.
