Which planter material actually survives a British winter outside?
Terracotta and unglazed ceramic absorb water and crack when it freezes inside them — the classic winter casualty. Stoneware and stone-effect resist it better; metal and synthetic rattan don't crack at all, though metal gets cold enough to chill roots. What to leave out all winter, and what to bring in.
What size planter do you need?
Step up 2–4cm for a small plant and 5–10cm for a large one, never more. Pot sizes, compost volumes, the six rules, and our own planters with the nursery pot each one takes.

Three Heights, Iron Rather Than Resin
Iron with a gold-finished surface rather than painted resin or plastic, which is what gives them weight in the hand and keeps them from skating across a floor when they're planted up.
Sizes and How They Group
The tallest stands 34cm on a 22 x 22cm base, with the other two stepping down from it. Three graduated heights work as a floor-standing group in a corner or either side of a doorway rather than as one planter on a table — put the tallest at the back and let them overlap.
Planting
We'd pot into plastic nursery pots and drop those inside rather than potting straight into the metal. It keeps water off the finish, and swapping a plant out becomes a lift rather than a repot.
Cleaning the Finish
Wipe with a soft cloth. Nothing abrasive — the gold is a surface finish, so scouring it is the one thing that will mark it.

All three arrive assembled. Unpack them and they're done.
